Concrete is the mixture of cement and water, with aggregates of sand and stones. This combination makes a stonelike, water and fire resistant solid. It can be shaped in different forms while it is liquid to produce all kind of structure elements with the advantage of continuity, wich means the absence of joints. It also can be fused with other constructive materials.

     Concrete allows to include domes and vaults in the designing of buildings to cover large areas. It is also used in the making of foundations adn structures that have to be water-proof such as bridges.

     Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, that is why reinforced concrete is invented. This means concrete with incorporated bars, grids, plates or fibers to strengthen it in tension. For a durable, strong and ductible construction the reinforcement must have thermal compatibility, high tensile strain and strength and must have a good bond to the concrete.

     Reinforced concrete is used basically in pipes, pavements, floors, arches, railway ties and bridges. It is also used in foundations, walls, columns and a variety of coverings. 

     Concrete buildings are more resistant to fires than wood or steel constructions, concrete doesn't burn, prevents fire from spreading and it doesn't produce any smoke. This and the properties mentioned before mean a huge advantage for concrete buildings, making this material the most common man-made material used in costruction.
